In a significant diplomatic engagement, leaders from Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines convened in Cebu, Philippines, to deliberate on the current situation between Thailand and Cambodia. The meeting, held at the Shangri-La Mactan hotel, brought together Thai Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The discussions were initiated by the Philippines, which currently chairs the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Rachada Dhanadirek, spokesperson for the Thai Prime Minister’s Office, confirmed the meeting’s purpose was to address ongoing issues and foster dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia. Following the talks, a press conference was held where President Marcos Jr. took the lead as the ASEAN chair, followed by remarks from Prime Minister Hun Manet and Prime Minister Anutin. Anutin expressed gratitude towards President Marcos Jr. for facilitating this crucial dialogue, emphasizing the constructive and forward-looking nature of the discussions with Cambodia.
The leaders underscored the importance of dialogue and peace, with Anutin highlighting the strong connection between Thailand and Cambodia as neighboring countries. He pointed out that conflicts inevitably lead to losses and hardships for all parties involved, thus reinforcing the value of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The meeting was seen as a pivotal moment for both nations to reaffirm their commitment to peaceful resolutions and cooperation. Anutin articulated the necessity for both Thailand and Cambodia to embark on a new chapter in their bilateral relations. This, he noted, would require genuine efforts, good faith, and mutual determination to overcome existing challenges and move forward together.
