The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Tesla’s new Robotaxi service, seeking information from the company after viral videos showcased erratic driving during its Austin, Texas, debut. The US’s primary transportation safety regulator is concerned by footage showing autonomous vehicles exceeding speed limits and veering into incorrect lanes, raising questions about their adherence to traffic laws.
Tesla had orchestrated a significant promotional push for the limited rollout, with pro-Tesla influencers documenting their paid Robotaxi rides. Ironically, the very content designed to generate positive attention has instead become a key piece of evidence for the NHTSA, as the videos appear to show the Robotaxis struggling with basic traffic compliance. This immediate regulatory attention underscores the high scrutiny faced by new autonomous technologies.
One particularly troubling video, posted by a former Tesla podcast host, depicted a Robotaxi misjudging a left turn, momentarily entering a lane for oncoming traffic, and then correcting itself over a double yellow line. Another video featured a pro-Tesla YouTuber praising the car for going “several miles per hour over the speed limit,” highlighting a clear disregard for established traffic regulations.
This new inquiry adds to the existing regulatory pressures on Tesla, which is already under an open NHTSA investigation concerning the safety of its “Full-Self Driving” mode, particularly in low-visibility conditions. With sales declining and profits significantly down in the first quarter of 2025, Elon Musk’s ambitious Robotaxi program is under intense scrutiny to prove its viability and safety amid these challenges.
