24 Iran Wants a Deal — But Will It Say the Words Trump Needs to Hear?

President Trump’s State of the Union Address revealed an interesting asymmetry in the current US-Iran nuclear negotiations: both sides appear to want an agreement, but Tehran has yet to make the one commitment Washington requires. Trump said Iran “wants to make a deal” but has not offered the “secret words” — a categorical public declaration that it will never build a nuclear weapon.
Trump confirmed that two rounds of talks have already taken place this month, suggesting the diplomatic channel is more active than public rhetoric might suggest. He framed the gap between the two sides not as a fundamental disagreement over whether to have a deal, but over whether Iran is willing to make the foundational commitment that would give such a deal credibility.
The President also recalled the military action that preceded the current talks: Operation Midnight Hammer, the US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites last June. He said the strikes had effectively destroyed Iran’s program but that Tehran has since begun rebuilding — a development he cited as evidence of why verbal commitments need to be explicit and verifiable.
Trump described Iran’s expanding missile capabilities as a parallel concern, warning that existing weapons already threaten Europe and US bases, and that longer-range missiles aimed at the US homeland are in development. He said these developments make the need for a clear, credible Iranian commitment all the more urgent.
The question Trump’s speech left hanging is whether Iran will make the statement he’s asking for. He said the possibility of a deal remains open, and that his preference is always diplomacy — but that without the “secret words,” no agreement can be reached.
