Google & Home Depot Drop Pride Toronto: A Wake-Up Call for LGBTQ+ Events?

by admin477351

The recent withdrawal of Google and Home Depot as major sponsors for Pride Toronto serves as a stark wake-up call for LGBTQ+ events across North America. This unexpected move, alongside previous departures from Nissan, Adidas, and Clorox, has left organizers facing a significant financial shortfall, directly attributed to Donald Trump’s anti-DEI agenda.
Kojo Modeste, executive director of Pride Toronto, received terse, one-line emails from both Google and Home Depot, signaling their abrupt disengagement. The financial void left by these prominent corporations is substantial, as their contributions are vital for funding staff, supporting a vast array of local artists, and ensuring the festival remains a free and inclusive event for its three million annual attendees.
Modeste conveyed his profound concern for the festival’s future, expressing anxiety about potentially having to “drastically cut what the festival looks like for 2026.” He highlighted the historical importance of accessible Pride celebrations and his reluctance to compromise the event for future generations, especially given his own memories of a time before widespread Pride.
Professor Sui Sui of Toronto Metropolitan University, an expert on DEI initiatives, confirms that this trend extends beyond Toronto. She noted that major sponsors have also abandoned Pride celebrations in New York City and Philadelphia, suggesting a widespread corporate re-evaluation of their public stances in the face of political pressure against diversity and inclusion.
