Mark Rydell, the acclaimed director known for the iconic film On Golden Pond, has passed away at the age of 97. He died of natural causes at a retirement community for entertainment professionals in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles.
Rydell’s legacy is perhaps most enduringly marked by his work on the 1981 film On Golden Pond, which showcased the talents of Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. This film was a major success, garnering 10 Oscar nominations and achieving over $119 million in global box-office earnings. Both Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn won Oscars for their performances, with Fonda receiving his only Academy Award for what would be his final film role. Although Rydell was nominated for Best Director, he was edged out by Warren Beatty for his work on Reds.
Throughout his illustrious career, Rydell collaborated with a host of Hollywood’s elite, including stars such as Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Bette Midler, James Caan, Robert Redford, and Mel Gibson.
