Vietnam’s VNREDSat-1 satellite program has established a significant platform for enhanced collaboration with France in the realm of space technology, paving the way for advancements in next-generation satellites and technology transfer. This cooperation is also expected to bolster training and domestic capabilities. VNREDSat-1, launched on May 7, 2013, marked a milestone as Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite. Officially transferred for operation in September 2013, the satellite continues to function in 2026, surpassing its initial five-year lifespan and entering its 14th year of service.
The initiative has been instrumental in expanding Vietnam’s expertise in satellite operations and beyond. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent comprehensive training in both France and Vietnam, gaining valuable skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training enabled them to independently manage technical issues, transitioning from following established procedures to developing innovative solutions. Additionally, Vietnam established a comprehensive remote-sensing system that addresses imaging requests, satellite control, and data processing. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images for various applications, including environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, highlighted the program’s role in laying a technical and human-resource foundation for future satellite projects. However, he emphasized the need for further advancements to achieve greater technological self-reliance. This includes progress in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter of cooperation commenced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent for long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. The partners are exploring options for a next-generation Earth observation system and the proposed VNREDSat-2. Future collaboration aims to enhance Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, and software development, along with testing and data applications. Opportunities for Vietnam to strengthen domestic expertise lie in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads.
The overarching goal is to shift from acquiring satellite systems to co-developing them, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to gradually master the design, operation, and development of future satellite technology generations independently. This move toward technological mastery would significantly elevate Vietnam’s position in the global space technology arena.
