UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has unveiled plans to establish a National Centre for Information Defence, aiming to combat hostile information campaigns, disinformation, and AI-generated deepfakes targeting the nation. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Burnham emphasized the centre’s role in detecting, attributing, and disrupting information attacks orchestrated by foreign states.

The initiative will consolidate efforts from security agencies, law enforcement, and various organizations to bolster the UK’s defenses against information warfare. Burnham specifically called out Russia, accusing it of deploying bots, fake websites, and falsified content to disseminate disinformation and sway public opinion. He also cited evidence of Russian attempts to interfere in the UK’s 2019 general election.

A significant focus of the new centre will be enhancing public resilience against misleading online content and deepfakes. The government plans to share its insights with other nations facing similar threats, particularly as Europe approaches a series of significant elections. This cooperative approach underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing these challenges.

Burnham highlighted the rapid development of artificial intelligence as a factor that could significantly increase the scope and impact of information attacks. He stressed the necessity of stronger national and international cooperation to effectively counter these evolving threats.
