Vietnam and Australia’s Australian Capital Territory (ACT) are set to enhance cooperation between the cities of Hà Nội, Ho Chi Minh City, and Canberra. This agreement follows discussions between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. Ambassador Tâm expressed optimism regarding Barr’s forthcoming visit to Hà Nội and Ho Chi Minh City, seeing it as a pivotal opportunity to broaden collaboration channels.
During their meeting, Tâm pointed out several potential areas for partnership, including renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and the development of smart urban solutions. He also proposed the creation of a friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT, aimed at fostering long-term collaboration across various sectors.
Barr, preparing for his inaugural visit to Vietnam, recognized the country as one of the ACT’s key economic partners within its international engagement strategy. He responded positively to the idea of forming a sister-city relationship with Hà Nội, highlighting the mutual benefits of cooperation in areas such as green transitions, electric transport, and renewable energy projects aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Additionally, Barr expressed a strong interest in engaging in public diplomacy activities during future visits by high-ranking Vietnamese officials to Australia. This commitment indicates a willingness to deepen ties and facilitate exchanges that benefit both regions.
