Vietnam and Panama are set to enhance their bilateral cooperation during Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino’s official visit to Vietnam from October 5 to 8. The visit is expected to focus on strengthening economic and trade ties between the two nations, with potential collaboration spanning agriculture, telecommunications, infrastructure, maritime transport, port logistics, banking, tourism, and education.

Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1975, Vietnam and Panama have expanded their partnership through various high-level exchanges and diplomatic consultations. Both countries are keen on leveraging their strategic geographic locations to better connect Southeast Asian and Latin American markets, providing a gateway for businesses and trade.

Economic cooperation remains a significant focus, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $478.1 million in 2025, representing a 19.2% increase compared to the previous year. Vietnam’s principal exports to Panama include footwear, electronics, textiles, vehicles, and seafood, while it imports timber, seafood, and raw materials from Panama.

Panama’s strategic position along the Panama Canal offers it a vital role in global shipping and logistics. This creates opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to gain greater access to Central American and Caribbean markets, which could be a pivotal aspect of the discussions during President Mulino’s visit.

The upcoming visit is anticipated to result in new agreements and initiatives aimed at expanding trade, investment, and cooperation across various sectors. Both nations are also expected to reinforce existing mechanisms for political and economic collaboration, setting the stage for a deeper and more robust partnership.
