The Trump administration’s decision to deport eight men to South Sudan has come under scrutiny after border czar Tom Homan admitted he has no information about their current status. The men, from countries including Vietnam and Mexico, were sent to a nation with which only one had any previous connection.
After being held in Djibouti due to a court order, the group was transferred to South Sudan following Supreme Court rulings that sided with the administration’s deportation policy. South Sudanese officials have confirmed the men are in custody and undergoing screening.
Homan’s admission that there’s like a 100 different endings to this underscores the uncertainty and risk faced by deportees sent to unstable countries. The situation has fueled debate over the US’s responsibility to ensure the safety of those it deports.
The administration has also deported migrants to other third countries, such as El Salvador, and is reportedly in talks with additional nations to accept deportees.
