Vietnam and Norway have committed to enhancing their bilateral ties in trade, renewable energy, and maritime development as they approach the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting in Hanoi on Friday between Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål. Both officials emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation and political dialogue between their countries.

A significant outcome of the meeting was the discussion on the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states. Deputy Foreign Minister Hang praised the conclusion of negotiations that spanned 14 years and urged all parties to expedite the ratification procedures to pave the way for implementation. This agreement is anticipated to enhance market accessibility and foster business partnerships, providing greater certainty for investors.

The talks also spotlighted the Green Strategic Partnership signed in April, aimed at bolstering sustainable development and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. Vietnam is encouraging Norwegian businesses and financial institutions to increase investments in sectors such as renewable energy, maritime transport, shipbuilding, port infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech aquaculture.

Norway expressed its interest in expanding cooperation in areas like marine management, sustainable aquaculture, green shipping, and the circular economy. The two nations discussed sharing technology and expertise to advance carbon neutrality and enhance energy security.

Additionally, the meeting covered regional cooperation, with Vietnam and Norway agreeing to strengthen their coordination within the ASEAN-Norway partnership from 2026 to 2030. The focus will be on the blue economy, energy transition, connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development.

Both countries also pledged to enhance collaboration between their foreign ministries and support each other in international forums, including the United Nations. They reaffirmed the principles of free trade, adherence to international law, and the importance of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The discussions underscore Vietnam and Norway’s shared commitment to expanding economic opportunities, deepening diplomatic relations, and promoting sustainable development efforts.
