Vietnam and Switzerland are set to deepen their Comprehensive Partnership, focusing on areas such as trade, investment, scientific research, and sustainable development, following Swiss President Guy Parmelin’s official visit to Vietnam. This visit, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, underscored their commitment to strengthening cooperation in mutually beneficial sectors.
A key development from the visit was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland as a member. This agreement aims to enhance market access, support business expansion, and create opportunities for stronger trade and investment once implemented. The two countries are targeting an increase in bilateral trade, which had surpassed $1 billion by 2025, and are encouraging greater Swiss investment in Vietnam, particularly in sectors like green finance, digital technology, and sustainable tourism.
Both nations emphasized the importance of political dialogue and economic ties, agreeing to expand exchanges between government agencies, businesses, and research organizations. They also identified potential collaborations in joint research and technology transfer in fields such as biomedicine, renewable energy, and digital economies. Such collaborations are expected to foster innovation and the commercialization of research outcomes.
Education emerged as another focal point, with Vietnam planning to strengthen partnerships and exchanges involving experts, researchers, and students, leveraging Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research. This move aims to enhance the quality of workforce development in Vietnam.
Both countries reiterated their commitment to sustainable development, free trade, and a rules-based international order. They expressed confidence that this strengthened cooperation would contribute to economic growth and promote regional and global stability. The discussions highlighted the significance of multilateral cooperation and the role of international institutions in fostering these goals.
