Powell Lauds Departing Bostic as Fed Faces Political Pressure

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has lauded the “steady voice” and “purpose-driven” service of Atlanta Fed President Raphael W. Bostic, who announced his retirement for February. Powell’s tribute comes as his institution continues to face a challenging political environment.
Bostic’s decision to step down at age 59, years before his term expired, creates a new vacancy on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). This follows the August departure of Governor Adriana Kugler, whose seat was then filled on an interim basis by Trump adviser Stephen Miran.
The backdrop to these changes is the Trump administration’s persistent campaign to influence the central bank’s monetary policy, primarily by demanding interest rate cuts. Bostic’s retirement removes a key regional voice from the Fed’s policy debates.
The search for Bostic’s successor, however, will be handled by the Atlanta Fed’s board, not the White House. The bank will conduct a nationwide search, a process that highlights the structural independence of the Fed’s regional arms.
Bostic, the first African American and openly gay regional Fed president, said he was “incredibly fortunate” to have served. He expressed pride in his work “to turn the lofty goal of an economy that works for everyone into more of a reality.” Powell added that Bostic’s leadership “strengthened our institution.”
