Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their diplomatic ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a milestone coinciding with the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. This development marks a significant enhancement in their political, economic, and technological cooperation. The agreement was solidified during the official visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, where both nations signed four crucial agreements focusing on economic cooperation, science and technology, education, and aviation development.

The two countries have also set forth a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the years 2026 to 2031, which aims to broaden collaboration across various sectors. A key focus of the upgraded partnership is boosting cooperation in security and defense, particularly in combating transnational crimes such as online scams and illegal fishing. The focus on security is complemented by a mutual commitment to deepen economic coordination to tackle global economic uncertainties and foster private-sector growth.

Economic ambitions are clear, as both nations aim to increase their bilateral trade beyond the current $22.1 billion, with a target of reaching $24 billion soon. The partnership underscores technology and innovation as critical areas, with plans to enhance cooperation in sectors like satellite technology, semiconductors, and agricultural biotechnology. The countries are also committed to promoting supply-chain integration, local economic connectivity, and green energy cooperation, thereby bolstering regional competitiveness and energy security.

President Tô Lâm emphasized Vietnam’s dedication to fortifying its relationship with Thailand. The commitment reflects a shared vision of working collaboratively towards peace, stability, and sustainable development across Southeast Asia. Both countries aim to leverage their strengthened partnership to address and adapt to regional and global challenges effectively.
