Vietnam is positioning itself as a key player in enhancing ASEAN-Russia cooperation, underscored by its active participation in the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. According to Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, Vietnam’s contributions were pivotal to the summit’s success, playing a significant role in promoting ASEAN’s central role and bolstering the strategic partnership between the bloc and Russia.
The Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, focused on fostering dialogue and cooperation, emphasizing the peaceful resolution of disputes and adherence to international law. Vietnam also advocated for expanded collaboration in crucial sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These proposals were part of the summit’s new frameworks aimed at fortifying ASEAN-Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy emerging as a key pillar of this partnership.
In a move reflecting its commitment to future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative is expected to further strengthen ties and foster collaboration among future leaders in the region. On the sidelines of the main summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The discussions between Vietnam and Russia centered on expanding cooperation across various sectors, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport. These talks are anticipated to pave the way for deeper bilateral ties and mutual growth. Vietnam believes that the outcomes of the summit will not only strengthen ASEAN-Russia relations but also enhance regional stability and open new avenues for economic growth and cooperation throughout Eurasia.
