Vietnam Vows to Enhance Strategic Partnership with Russia in ASEAN

Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in enhancing ASEAN and Russia’s cooperative efforts following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. During the summit, Vietnam’s Foreign Minister, Lê Hoài Trung, emphasized the significant contributions made by Vietnam, which played a crucial part in promoting ASEAN’s central role and advancing the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.

Led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation focused on key principles such as dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law. Vietnam also put forward proposals to expand collaboration in crucial sectors, including energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation, highlighting its commitment to fostering regional development.

The summit concluded with the adoption of new frameworks aimed at bolstering ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a major component of the partnership. In a further display of commitment, Vietnam announced its plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, underscoring its dedication to nurturing future regional cooperation and diplomacy.

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reaffirming both nations’ commitment to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The talks focused on expanding cooperation in various fields, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transportation. These discussions mirror the broader objectives of strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new avenues for collaboration.

Vietnam believes that the outcomes of the summit will significantly enhance ASEAN–Russia relations, contributing to greater regional stability and creating new opportunities for economic growth and cooperation across the Eurasian region. The strengthened partnership is seen as a step forward in fostering prosperity and stability, benefiting not only ASEAN and Russia but also the broader international community.
