Vietnam and Laos are set to enhance their cooperative efforts in several key sectors, following a mid-year meeting in Da Nang. Officials from both nations reviewed the ongoing progress of their 2026 cooperation plan, emphasizing the importance of bolstering ties in investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development. During the meeting, they assessed achievements from the first eight months of the year and outlined strategic priorities for the remaining months of 2026.

Economic collaboration between the two countries has shown significant growth, with Vietnamese enterprises initiating 20 new investment projects in Laos, amounting to $638.3 million in the initial seven months of the year. Laos continues to be Vietnam’s leading foreign investment destination, hosting approximately 300 Vietnamese-supported projects with a cumulative value exceeding $7 billion. Moreover, bilateral trade between the nations reached about $1.3 billion during the first half of 2026, reflecting a robust economic partnership.

The countries are also jointly advancing in sectors such as energy, transportation, construction, and infrastructure connectivity, which are pivotal to their bilateral relations. Education and human resource development are highlighted as core areas of collaboration, with Vietnam committing to provide 1,300 scholarships for Lao students in 2026. Additionally, Vietnam has allocated $43 million in aid to Laos for the year, as part of a comprehensive assistance program running from 2026 to 2030.

In their discussions, Vietnam and Laos agreed to improve coordination on significant projects and address any challenges in investment to further strengthen their economic links. The commitment to enhancing cooperation extends beyond bilateral interests, aiming to bolster ties across the broader Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region, thereby fostering a more integrated economic landscape in Southeast Asia.
