Vietnam is seeking to enhance its collaboration with Japan in the fields of strategic technologies, emphasizing sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. The call for deeper cooperation was made during discussions on September 3 between Vietnamese science and technology officials and members of Japan’s House of Representatives. The dialogue centered around semiconductor research, AI, energy technologies, workforce development, and strengthening business ties within these critical industries.
As part of the NEXUS joint research initiative, Vietnam and Japan are committed to co-funding semiconductor research that encompasses chip design, advanced materials, and manufacturing technologies. The partnership aims to extend its cooperative efforts beyond 2027. Additionally, Vietnam is keen on receiving support from Japan to build its sovereign AI capabilities and develop Vietnamese-language large language models. A joint working group from both nations is anticipated to convene in October to facilitate technology transfer and bolster business connections in the semiconductor field.
Vietnam has proposed that the NEXUS program be expanded into an annual cooperation framework, suggesting widened research efforts in AI, new materials, renewable energy, and biomedicine. The country is also advocating for stronger business partnerships and enhanced training opportunities for engineers and experts in strategic technology arenas. Concurrently, Japan has shown interest in Vietnam’s semiconductor advancements, its labor policies, and its comprehensive energy strategy, which includes a push towards nuclear power expansion.
Vietnam is pursuing a diversified energy strategy that integrates conventional energy sources, renewable energies, and nuclear power, with a focus on researching small modular reactors. The country acknowledges that its energy transition will necessitate substantial investment and a skilled workforce, expressing hope that Japan will continue to be a pivotal partner in developing the necessary infrastructure to support its burgeoning high-tech industries.
