In a significant diplomatic move, Thailand and France have agreed to elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. This decision emerged from official discussions between Thai leader Anutin Charnvirakul and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The meeting, held at the Élysée Palace, prioritized expanding cooperation in crucial sectors such as trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology.
The discussions also covered regional issues, specifically focusing on developments in Cambodia and Myanmar. An essential aspect of the talks was the commitment to enhance collaboration in various industries, including alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for the swift conclusion of negotiations on the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement, a process initially launched in 2013 but put on hold in 2014, and resumed in 2023. Thai officials believe this agreement could unlock substantial economic opportunities for both nations.
The two countries have also pledged to bolster defense and cybersecurity ties, with a particular focus on combating cybercrime, online scams, and other transnational digital threats. On regional matters, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to addressing border issues with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international law frameworks. This commitment underscores Thailand’s broader strategy of fostering regional stability.
Looking ahead, both governments announced the implementation of a Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership for 2026-2028. This plan aims to formalize the strategic partnership further. During his visit to France, Anutin took the opportunity to meet with top executives from major French companies, including Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group. These discussions aimed at encouraging increased investment in Thailand’s high-tech and emerging industries.
French companies have shown confidence in the investment climate of Thailand, with Airbus confirming its intention to expand aviation and engineering operations in the country. This move highlights the growing economic ties between the two nations and sets a strong foundation for future collaboration.
