Singapore and Thailand are set to enhance their bilateral and regional cooperation as they gear up for consecutive terms at the helm of ASEAN, with Singapore leading in 2027 and Thailand in 2028. This decision was made during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held on September 2 in Bangkok, marking the first meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. It was also the first bilateral retreat between the two nations in over a decade. Both leaders emphasized the strength of their bilateral relations and agreed to establish a multi-year plan to ensure continuity in their ASEAN leadership.
The countries plan to broaden their collaboration in several key areas, including artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, defense and security, and the fight against transnational crime. In addition, they expressed their commitment to a rules-based international order and emphasized the importance of stronger regional integration within ASEAN.
Energy cooperation was a prominent topic of discussion, with both nations endorsing the ASEAN Power Grid initiative and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This project facilitates the importation of renewable hydropower from Laos to Singapore via Thailand and Malaysia, underscoring their commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
During the retreat, the leaders also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding focused on social sector development. This agreement aims to foster the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies and promote collaboration between relevant institutions in both countries.
The economic relationship between Singapore and Thailand remains robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Notably, Singapore has maintained its position as Thailand’s largest source of foreign direct investment for three consecutive years, highlighting the significant economic ties between the two nations.
