EasyJet Opposes EU Free Baggage Plan Citing Unfair Cost Distribution

by admin477351

EasyJet has argued that European Union baggage regulations would create unfair cost distribution by forcing all passengers to subsidize services that not everyone uses or values.
The proposed legislation aims to guarantee free cabin baggage for all passengers across European aviation. European lawmakers voted with substantial majorities to support regulations requiring airlines to provide allowances for both personal items and larger carry-on bags.
The airline’s leadership contends that current pricing models distribute costs more equitably. Passengers who choose to travel with additional baggage pay fees that reflect the service they receive, while those traveling light benefit from lower base fares without subsidizing others’ choices.
Mandatory free baggage would require airlines to spread costs across all tickets, effectively forcing passengers with minimal luggage to pay for baggage services they don’t use. This could paradoxically reduce overall fairness while ostensibly enhancing passenger rights.
Beyond equity concerns, the regulations would eliminate significant revenue that EasyJet currently generates from ancillary services. The airline reported quarterly losses of £93 million but sees positive indicators in booking volumes and route expansion efforts.
