Thai lawmakers are pressing for swift investigations into allegations of money laundering and scams involving 28 individuals and entities, following a formal request by two U.S. House committee chairs for potential sanctions. The inquiry implicates former Thai deputy finance minister Vorapak Tanyawong, who has refuted any connections to illicit activities, including money laundering and human trafficking.

The U.S. congressional request seeks the State and Treasury departments’ involvement in examining these individuals and entities, with a view towards sanctions if legal criteria are met. Notably, this request does not automatically impose sanctions or confirm any wrongdoing.

Thailand’s Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, emphasized that the allegations should be addressed through proper legal channels, ensuring those accused have the opportunity to defend themselves. He further clarified that the allegations are unrelated to his current government.

Vorapak Tanyawong has expressed his willingness to cooperate fully with the investigations. He has reportedly reached out to the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control to learn how he can present documents and evidence to counter the allegations made against him.
