In a significant diplomatic engagement, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing convened in Hà Nội on September 5, pledging to bolster their nations’ bilateral relations and enhance cooperation in various sectors. This visit marked Min Aung Hlaing’s debut in Vietnam as president, where Hưng reiterated Vietnam’s backing for Myanmar’s endeavors toward stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth.
During the meeting, Min Aung Hlaing commended Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its expanding influence both regionally and internationally. He expressed a keen interest in adopting Vietnam’s developmental strategies and reaffirmed Myanmar’s dedication to sustaining its longstanding friendship and extensive cooperation with Vietnam. The leaders expressed satisfaction with the recent advancements in their bilateral relations and agreed to facilitate more high-level exchanges to bolster political trust. A key outcome was the agreement to reinstate crucial cooperation mechanisms in trade, security, and defense.
Defense and security were highlighted as foundational elements of the partnership, with both countries intending to intensify efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Plans were also discussed to broaden military training, exchange programs for young officers, and collaborative efforts on non-traditional security challenges. Economic collaboration was another major focus, as both nations explored avenues to boost trade and update agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation for Vietnamese investment in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure.
Infrastructure and air connectivity improvements were also on the agenda, including the restoration of direct flights and the development of joint tourism initiatives, such as spiritual and medical tourism. On the regional front, Vietnam committed to continuing its collaboration with ASEAN members to maintain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar, with both sides endorsing peaceful dispute resolution in line with international law.
Looking ahead, Hưng invited Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and to chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội slated for November 2026. In a reciprocal gesture, Min Aung Hlaing invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a time that suits both parties. This exchange of invitations underscores the commitment of both leaders to further deepen ties and cooperation between Vietnam and Myanmar.
